Strengthening gender responsive reporting by community radio stations in four Counties in Kenya

With Counties becoming the fulcrum of development, the community radio has emerged as an influential platform in advancing the participation of marginalised groups and communities in development. But the programming of these radio stations is not gender responsive. Women are not used as key sources of information and the radios are not holding county governments accountable on their gender mainstreaming approaches.

This project proposes to help five community radio stations in four Counties (Nairobi, Narok, Busia, Kisumu) formulate gender guidelines/policies to inform their editorial practice.

Objective

Have women voices and issues visible in the editorial content and practice of community radio stations

Project Duration:

January 2015 - December 2015

 Activities

  • Buy-in meetings with the senior managers of the selected community radio stations.
  • Hold a two day workshop on the drafting of the guidelines/policies and workplans.
  • Provision of technical support to the community radio stations during the drafting process.
  • Train journalists from selected community radio stations on gender responsive reporting.
  • Hold dialogue meetings between journalists, community members, and the county government officials.
