Return of IDPs not a durable solution

The return of Kenya’s post 2007 elections Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to areas that were affected by land grievances should not be promoted as a durable solution but rather as a temporary measure to be accompanied by clear efforts to resolve the underlying causes of displacements, London based Overseas Development Institute (ODI) warns.

In its recent humanitarian policy group brief, the institute recommends that if durable solutions are found, programmes must henceforth take account of those who were forced to move in earlier wave of displacement.

No Pills for Women in Refugee Camps

For Rachel Woiyera, the 2007 elections is something she would have postponed if she was able to do two things: the power to foretell and stop what was going to happen.

With six months old pregnancy, Woiyera was blissfully waiting to deliver her third baby when one morning she was awaken with cries and fire everywhere.

As they clutch tightly to their mothers clothes, children with rheumy eyes and running noses look at the strangers around them wondering if they have come to finish what was started by some else.

But those in their midst are good people who have come to provide them with food and shelter. But for these children, the psychological trauma brought unto them by post-election violence is what many do not understand.

From Europe to Asia, and America to Africa human rights issue remain a major concern.

It’s particularly worrying in developing countries where the trend continues with impunity.

 

ImageIN a wake up call, civil societies have resolved to put a big fight against governments that are selling all the land to investors leaving the indigenous people homeless in their own countries.

This resolution came out of a heated debate which was characterised by passion, emotions and flaring tempers during a session dubbed “Alliance 2015: The Right to a Livelihood and The Struggle for Land Rights”.

Children's rights abused in trafficking

ONE of the greatest human rights abuses that is currently haunting Africa is human trafficking and particularly child trafficking.

Girls and boys as well as women are being trafficked to western countries to serve as sex slaves. There are those who are used locally in sex tourism. Kenya was recently named as one of the leading countries where child sex tourism is deeply entrenched.

Forced evictions continue unabated

ImageALMOST everyday, the common man suffers from the social injustice of being evicted from their home or land either by the government or people who are more powerful than them. The situation worsens in areas where people have been forcefully evicted from their land as a result of land clashes.
